After a difficult last leg, mother and son Margie & Luke soared back into first place while brothers Mark & Michael made critical mistakes resulting in two two-hour penalties and a last place finish.

Episode 7: Gorilla? Gorilla? Gorilla?

The blazing hot sun of Thailand took its toll on Margie as she collapsed on the mat after a strenuous leg. Meanwhile, brothers Mark & Michael thought they’d won the leg, but two penalties pushed them down to third place. Sibling lawyers Tammy & Victor won the leg and father and son Mel & Mike came in last.

Amazing Race Challenge 7: Mel and Mike could have really used some directions when they arrived in Thailand. They had a lot of trouble finding a strange looking statue. Using Google Maps, list the directions they should have given their Taxi driver when they FIRST arrived in Thailand.

Episode 6: A Caravan of Fools

The chaos and confusion of Jaipur, India proved no match for lawyer siblings Tammy & Victor, who cruised to their second victory of the race. Meanwhile, a slow taxi and the Speed Bump task hampered flight attendants Christie & Jodi who were the fifth team eliminated.

Mother and son Margie & Luke used a new twist in the race, the Blind U-turn, to help allies Jamie and Cara by engineering the elimination of dating couple Amanda & Kris.

During the Detour, teams had to decipher the name of a famous Russian playwright.  Mr. Grafton knew IMMEDIATELY which playwright they were talking about.  "I could have won this challenge.  I have a poster for one of his plays in my classroom," he said to Mrs. Grafton.

Father and son Mel & Mike won the leg while siblings and lawyers Tammy & Victor’s relationship issues came to the surface when their standing in the race suffered.

When teams traveled to the German Alps, Mel appeared stranded on a mountaintop until a gamble paid off that propelled him and his son Mike to a second place finish. Meanwhile, Linda became desperately lost on a mountain trail ultimately leading to her and husband’s Steve elimination.

Let the Race Begin!

"Monsieur is going to leave home?" he asked.

"Yes", replied Phileas Fogg.  "We are going to make the tour of the world."

Passepartout, with his eyes wide open, his eyebrows raised, his arms extended, and his body collapsed, presented all the symptoms of an astonishing amounting to stupor.

"The tour of the world!" he murmured.

"In eighty days," replied Mr. Fogg.  "So we have not a moment to lose."

In 1873, the idea of a trip around the world in eighty days would have seemed quite far fetched.  But, today, we are able to travel anywhere in a matter of hours.  My, how the times have changed.

As a side project for Social Studies, I invite you to join 11 teams as they race around the world.  The Amazing Race 14 premiered on February 15.  For those of you who haven't seen the show, the idea is that each team is racing through various countries all over the globe, trying to be the first to get to the finish line.  The winners will collect $1 000 000!  

The Show airs on Sunday nights.  Tune in and track the contestants.  Pay close attention to their destinations, their challenges, and their road blocks.  Following each episode, we will have some exciting class activities to go along with the game.

The Amazing Race’s first deaf contestant, Luke, made a strong statement by winning the first leg with his mother, Margie, as teams traveled to Locarno, Switzerland. 

A mistake by Christie & Jodi almost cost them the race, but a late surge by the flight attendants in a foot race to the mat sent dating couple Preston & Jennifer home instead.
